Crossing the Pop Culture Universe
Informally known as Hollywood and Bollywood, these film industries have had huge impacts on American and Hindi cinema (respectively). Hollywood is known world-wide and has had the biggest impact out of the two. Bollywood, however, is the largest film producer in the country of India. Recently, Bollywood has been including more English in its film's dialogue. This suggests that Bollywood might hold American cinema at a higher level, and so they're trying to incorporate more of their language into their movies. The informal name of Hindi cinema, Bollywood, is also a play on the name of American cinema, Hollywood. These two aspects of Hindu and American pop culture connect in the sense that they're both the leading cinemas in their countries (although Hollywood remains the most powerful in the world).
"When I despair, I remember all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants, and murderers, and for a time they can seem invincible, but in the end they always fall. Think of it. Always."
Mohandas Gandhi was a man who grew up in India to become a lawyer but ended up being the leader in non-violent protests that gained the independence of India. He was born in October 2nd of 1869 and died January 30th of 1948. Gandhi was born into a high social caste. He never really experienced problems with racism or segregation until he was riding a train in South Africa one day and the conductor denied him a first class seat, which is what he payed for. Despite trying to persuade the conductor, he was thrown out. This angered Gandhi very much, and that event was the start of his leader in Indian independence.
Gandhi's very first protesting rally was when he gathered a group of people and they burned their registration papers (all people classified as "colored" had to have these passes) as an act of defiance towards the South African government. Despite being beaten by the police, he kept burning the passes. He was arrested for this but didn't act out violently and wasn't discouraged. After being released from jail, Gandhi went back to India and began countless peaceful protests in an effort to gain civil rights and independence for British owned India.
Mohandas Gandhi was beaten down, oppressed, intimidated many times by the government of Britain during his time as a peaceful protester. But he never lost faith, he never lost heart. His whole life is filled with accomplishments that were achieved through hard work. The quote that is provided above (Gandhi's words himself) is something that Mohandas Gandhi truly lived by, and it is something that we should live by too.

Goonj
Goonj is an NGO in India that works toward bringing basic necessities to the people of India. They are also helping children get a better education. The founder of this company is Anshu, a.k.a. "The Clothing Man". He wanted to bring attention to the lack of concern toward people who didn't have a basic necessity, clothing. He also has brought attention to the lack of hygiene in women (something that is considered a taboo, and not spoken of). His ideas about bringing these everyday needs to people in India branched out into a big company.
Goonj has also started a program that would bring awareness to the millions of children in rural schools and the condition of their education. They also started the Rahat floods program, which works toward helping people that are victims of floods. They also recycle clothing, to reduce the throwing away of perfectly useful fabric. The cool thing about this is that there are no designers involved, just volunteers. This shows that Goonj is truly a company that expects nothing in return for the service it's doing.
